AXIS Architecture + Design Celebrates the Completion of San Francisco’s Axiom Hotel Renovation Project

The bar at The Axiom Hotel, a boutique hotel renovation in San Francisco by AXIS Architecture + Design

With the publication of its official promotional photography this month, AXIS/GFA Architecture + Design celebrates the formal completion and delivery of one of its latest hotel renovation projects – The Axiom Hotel.  As Architect of Record for this multi-year hotel redevelopment for Host Hotels and Resorts, AXIS helped transform the historic former Powell Hotel into San Francisco’s newest independent boutique hotel property.

Blending the historic with the contemporary

Delivering an updated design for the 108-year-old building was an exercise in marrying the hotel’s historic past with Host Hotels and Resorts’ modern vision for the property.  Situated only a short walk to the famous Union Square cable car turn-around, the hotel’s beautiful turn-of-the-century façade respects its historic surroundings with an almost imperceptible update.  Upon entering the building, guests are greeted with a truly unique arrival experience that unabashedly introduces the hotel’s modern design, directing arrivals to the lobby through a light tunnel that reflects and outlines each guest as they emerge into the bright and airy reception space.  Once in the lobby, the blending of historic and tech-forward influences is unmistakable: guest can opt to check-in making use of iPad stations, all of which are backdropped by painted riveted steel beams from the hotel’s original construction, themselves reminiscent of the nearby Golden Gate Bridge.  Contemporary art hangs effortlessly beside antique curios, with a feature art installation – a series of colored cables hanging the entire height of the hotel from the top floor into the lobby – paying homage to San Francisco’s cable cars and their influence on the area.

Simple but functional rooms leveraged by inviting and connected communal spaces

The 152 key hotel features modern but minimalistic rooms, each with stark finishings that still imbue a feeling of luxury.  The blending of historic and modern aesthetics continues in each guest room, with modern light features illuminating seemingly antique wood furniture, and with the modern bathroom accessed through an industrial roller-and-rail hung door.  The rooms, although small, are leveraged with multiple communal and public spaces that encourage socialization and conversation; guests are almost drawn from their rooms to experience the common areas.  Catering to the tech-savvy business and leisure traveler on the point of Axiom’s brand, guest rooms are fully equipped with fiber optic connectivity and Apply TV.  Invisibly, technology continues throughout the hotel with the building earning LEED Certification.

With its formal debut earlier this spring, The Axiom Hotel is now open and has already received accolades for its design.  Thanks and credit to Stonehill & Taylor for their interior design vision and expertise.
